Hospitality, Volunteering: the alternative accommodation guide

Post updated on June 09, 2020

Sleeping at people’s house is what makes the taste of our trip: to spend another night on the road is a pretext for encounters, exchange, enrichment… This is what makes our adventure possible and unique, allowing us to reach our ecological, economic and cultural exchange goals. But before we got there, we had to learn how to get rid of our comfort, to talk to others – in a word, to get out of our comfort zone. What was not an obvious step yesterday, has become one today: that’s why we created this hospitality and volunteering guide to help you live a journey out of the ordinary!

Responsible travel: should we refrain from visiting over-frequented places?

During our trip, we asked ourselves several times this question: “Should we boycott over-frequented places?” Indeed our way of traveling tried to be the more responsible possible, but is it really responsible to visit a place that suffers from mass tourism? We wanted to put our thoughts here, bringing both our personal and documented lights on the subject, in order to bring out some answers… but especially solutions!

Responsible travel: how to reduce your environmental impact

A recent study shows that global tourism is responsible for 8% of greenhouse gas emissions (4.5 Giga Tonnes of CO2 emitted in 2013 are directly attributable to tourism). A figure that would not be ready to decline, since tourism is growing by + 4% per year… According to these scientists, transport, shopping and food are the main factors contributing to this pollution. Fortunately, today there are plenty of simple solutions, easy alternatives to reduce our environmental impact while traveling – so we can still enjoy traveling without getting annoyed by doing more efforts or feeling guilty!

No need to draw you a picture: traveling without flight means using all the other means of transport at your disposal. Sweet, from Afghanistan to Europe

It was a sunny Thursday. We had just arrived in Belgrade (Serbia), and the good weather made us decide to eat outside. Sitting on a bench in the small park facing the central station, sandwich in hand, we contemplated scenes of life, people talking, walking, laughing. And then, when we got up from the bench, two young people with oriental features spoke to us in English: “Can we take a picture of you?” they asked, showing our bags and our cardboard, on which we had drawn the Eiffel Tower. “Of course, do you live here in Belgrade?” Silence. “No… We are from Afghanistan” We then realized … “Are you refugees?” “Yes”.

Zhangjiajie, our hike in the heart of Avatar – China

Our journey in Western and Central China took us through Hunan; a province of an incredible beauty, inhabited by several ethnic minorities, endemic animal and plant species. It’s also in this subtropical climate province that we found the popular forest park of Zhangjiajie – whose natural elements are unmistakably reminiscent of the setting of the film Avatar. Curious, we let ourselves be tempted by a visit to the park. A visit under the sign of rain, mist, but also (and fortunately!) of wonders… and we can say it, of a real visual slap in the face!

Hitchhiking trip on the Ha Giang loop and the Cao Bang mountains – Vietnam

Leaving the mountainous region of Sapa, its tourists and rainy weather, we continued our hitchhiking trip to another mountainous region, in the provinces of Hà Giang and Cao Bang, located in the North-East of Vietnam, on the border with China. On the spot, we did not only find good weather and few tourists; we also found much more authentic, captivating and impressive green landscapes!

Destination Singapore: our travel guide

Arrived at the gates of Singapore, we took the opportunity to visit this incredible city-state with the help of Ashlie, our Singaporean contact met two years earlier in Greece. Oversized, clean, orderly, green and contrasted: these are the words that came to our mind to describe this heaven for finance and commerce. Let’s take a look back on our journey on this very prosperous Asian island!

Transport and ecology: explanations by a world traveler-engineer

After graduating as an engineer, Clément, Julien’s little brother, undertook (also) a world trip by hitchhiking with a friend. On the road, Clément developed a reflection on transport and ecology, a subject that is close to his (and our) heart… Not having a blog but things to say, we wanted (with his blessing) to share his thoughts, giving him total freedom of speech – for a result that reflects its author: punchy, scientific and totally offbeat!

Destination China: our travel guide

Two months is the (very small) amount of time we had to cross the 3rd largest country in the world: China. From the desert highlands of Xinjiang to the mountains of Yunnan, through the tropical forests of Hunan, we were totally amazed by the beauty of the landscapes, the Chinese gastronomy and the exceptional cultural heritage of this country. Are you interested to visit Western and Central China? We’ll take you there through this guide!

Visa for Cambodia at the border & border crossing at Moc Bai/Bavet

At the beginning of March 2019, we came to Cambodia by land, via the Vietnamese-Cambodian border post of Moc Bai/Bavet… By hitchhiking, and especially without going through an agency! As a result, we got our tourist visa for Cambodia quite quickly, and at the right price – i.e. without paying baksheesh to corrupt customs officers. Here, we give you a feedback on our experience!
